Slaton, Booty and McFadden; Odds-On-Favorites to win 2007 Heisman Trophy
I knew sooner or later one of my favorite sportsbooks would post a list of pre-season Heisman Trophy odds for those of us who think about college football 12 months a year. For Southerners like me, football season is actually broken down into sub-seasons. First we have the regular football season followed by bowl season. Bowl season is replaced by recruiting season running through February. The NCAA signing period for Division-1A football begins within the first week of February but we talk about it, analyze it, chew on it and rank it over a four or five week period if not longer.
After recruiting season we shift to spring football season. Our favorite schools can’t play rival schools but at least we can follow the 15 NCAA allotted practices capped by an ending spring game. Following spring football we slide into the most grueling season of all, the season of anticipation. The season of anticipation sometimes called the season of delusional expectations will run until kickoff. It’s during the season of anticipation when we can analyze pre-season props installed by the online and Las Vegas sportsbooks. Since few of us live within reach of a walk-in sportsbook we must rely on our friends offshore. If you think you have a handle on who will win the BCS National Championship this is a good time to back up your expectations with your money. However, today I want to look at who oddsmakers think has the best chance to walk away with college football’s highest individual award, the Heisman Trophy.
According to online sportsbook Sportbet.com, the top three players having the best chance to win the Heisman Trophy are West Virginia running back Steve Slaton (+400), Southern Cal quarterback John David Booty (+400) and 2006 Heisman Trophy runner-up, Darren McFadden the versatile Arkansas tailback. My personal favorite to win the trophy is Darren McFadden because I think he is hands down, the best football player in college football. I think any quarterback at Southern Cal has a good chance to win and John David Booty fits that bill. Mountaineer Steve Slaton is a great runner but I see him competing for votes against his quarterback at West Virginia quarterback, Pat White with +1200 odds.
