It's Official: Former Arkansas QB Mitch Mustain Is A USC Trojan Now
Los Angeles, CA (AHN) - USC got its quarterback of the future recently when former Arkansas Razorbacks signal caller Mitch Mustain decided to transfer to the Trojans.
Tim Tessalone, the university's sports information director, confirmed the news on Monday and said the highly regarded football player is currently taking classes at the school.
Mustain, who played his freshman year with the Razorbackslast season, won all eight games he started with the Razorbacks. He will have to sit out next season but he will have three years of eligibility left.
His absence this seasonwill be perfect for the Trojans and for Mustain because they already have senior John David Booty as the established starter.
John David Booty had a fantastic year last season, throwing for 3,347 yards and 29 touchdowns and helping the Trojans to a Rose Bowl win.
Mustain's transfer from Arkansas to USC is one of the more interesting stories in college football this off season.
The Razorbacks had one of their best seasons in years, winning the SEC West and finishing with a 10-4 record, but lost to Wisconsin in the Capital One Bowl.
The team's offensive coordinator, Gus Malzahn, transferred to coach at Tulsa soon after the loss and said part of the reason was because he had problems with head coach Houston Nutt.
Wide receiver Damian Williams also left the club and transferred to USC as well.
The most interesting aspect to the defections is all three men were affiliated with the 2005 Arkansas high school state football championship team. Malzahn coached Mustain and Williams.
One of the biggest reasons Mustain decided to transfer, however, was because he was replaced as the Razorbacks starting quarterback in the 10th game. This happened despite his leading the team to the top of the SEC West standings.
Mustain finished the year with decent numbers, throwing for 894 yards and ten touchdowns against nine interceptions, but his stats would have been more impressive if he played the whole season.
USC expects Mustain to compete with Mark Sanchez to be the starter in 2008.
