Los Angeles is the largest city in the state of California and the second-largest in the United States of America.[1] Often abbreviated as L.A., it is an alpha world city having an estimated 2006 population of 3.8 million.[2] and spanning over 469.1 square miles (1,214.9 square kilometers) in Southern California. Additionally, the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana metropolitan area is home to nearly 13 million people who hail from all over the globe and speak more than a hundred different languages.[3] Los Angeles is the seat of Los Angeles County, the most populous county in the United States. Its inhabitants call themselves "Angelenos." The city's most popular nickname is the "City of Angels".
Los Angeles was founded in the year of 1781 by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve as El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de Porciúncula (The Village of Our Lady, the Queen of the Angels of Porciúncula). It became a part of Mexico in 1821 following its independence from Spain. In 1848 at the end of the Mexican-American War, Los Angeles and California became part of the United States. It was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850-five months before California achieved statehood.
Los Angeles is one of the world's most prominent centers of culture, technology, and international trade. It is home to world-renowned institutions covering a broad range of professional and cultural fields. The city and its immediate vicinity lead the world in producing popular entertainment - such as motion picture, television, and recorded music - which forms the base of Los Angeles' international fame and global status.
Currently it consists of teams in the NBA, which are the Los Angeles Clippers and the Los Angeles Lakers. In the WNBA, it contains the Los Angeles Sparks. In the MLS, it consists of the Los Angeles Galaxy and Chivas USA. The MLB has the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. In the NHL, it has the Los Angeles Kings and the Anaheim Ducks, thanks to their presence in the Greater Los Angeles area with the Angels. The AFL has the Los Angeles Avengers. The MLL has the Los Angeles Riptide. In the hispanic community, there is a great fan basis for Mexican soccer teams. The most popular of the soccer squads are Chivas and América, who have developed a bitter sports rivalry, similar to the Dodgers-Giants Rivalry.
In the NCAA, the two most famous schools in Los Angeles are the USC Trojans and the UCLA Bruins, which both schools have successful college football teams.
The Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Sparks, Los Angeles Kings, and the Los Angeles Avengers host their home games at Staples Center. The Los Angeles Galaxy, Chivas USA, and the Los Angeles Riptide host their home games at the Home Depot Center. The Los Angeles Dodgers play at Dodger Stadium, while the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim play at Angel Stadium of Anaheim. Meanwhile, the Anaheim Ducks play at the Honda Center, formerly known as the Arrowhead Pond Of Anaheim.
The NFL had a great presence with the Rams and Raiders being in Los Angeles. The American Football League also had a presence with the Chargers, now part of the NFL. Los Angeles currently is looking for a new stadium to attract the NFL back to the City of Angels.
