Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress says Tarvaris Jackson and Gus Frerotte will both have chance at starting QB job
Tarvaris Jackson isn't going anywhere.
Jackson will at least be competing to retain his starting spot, and Gus Frerotte is Childress' preference to compete with him.
Tarvaris is going to be on our roster,
Childress told a handful of Minnesota-based reporters. I just expect another step in the development.
Childress acknowledged that his intention is slightly different than a year ago, when he signed Frerotte to mentor his anointed starter, Jackson.
Both will have a chance at the job at training camp in July, although Frerotte still hasn't announced whether he will return to the team despite being under contract for 2009.
Childress said he recently spoke to Frerotte, and he is pleased that the veteran wants to start. In addition, Childress said he has not set a deadline for Frerotte to make a decision, although he hoped it would happen before free agency starts next Friday.
Childress said it would be up to him to determine the practice terms, allowing both quarterbacks a chance to work with receivers such as Bernard Berrian and the starting offensive line.
Childress also noted that Frerotte has not asked for his release.
As for options elsewhere, Childress — per usual — wouldn't rule anything out.
But right now I would be honest with you and tell you I wouldn't know who that person would be,
he said.
